Keeping My Mind Occupied While I Crochet

Dimholt today – Starting the lace panel

I try to keep my mind occupied while I crochet or spin.  Unless the crochet pattern is especially difficult, I need some form of entertainment or educational experience.  My mind has to be working or it wanders off somewhere and I loose my stitch count.

I’ve always liked mental activities, not physical ones. When I was in school, I hated gym class, but loved English and History. My ideal gym class would have been sitting in the bleachers reading a good book. Instead I had to move around and waste a precious forty-five minutes of my day doing activities I wasn’t very good at.

Some people have been under the mistaken impression that all I do is play PC games.  That is not true in the least.  There is no way under the sun that I can physically spin or crochet while using a computer keyboard and mouse at the same time.  It’s impossible.  Think about that for a moment.

Though my hands are working, my mind is only required occasionally.  I need to occupy my mind while my hands repeat a stitch over and over and over again.  So during those times that my mind isn’t required, I watch gaming videos on YouTube.  I would prefer to read, but it requires at least a finger to turn the page.  Yes, I know that there are audio books, but I prefer to read the words on a page, not listen to someone else narrate.

I wonder if there is an app on the Kindle where I could say, “Turn page”.  Now that is an interesting idea.  Anyone know if there is such a beast?  I would love to know.  It would bring reading a good book back into my life.

Why There Are No WIP’s Today

Since I’ve been concentrating on spinning the last several days, my crochet projects have been forgotten so there are no new WIP’s on my hook. It’s just the same old projects. I did work on the Dimholt Shawl a bit at the library this morning and it’s transitioned back to the lace panel. However, there is still a brick’s worth of Scheepjes’ Whirl left on the cake. Boy, is that one solid cake of yarn!

Don’t worry. I’m not abandoning crochet. It’s just a phase I am going through. Perhaps the problem is that there is not enough time in the day to do everything that I need to do.

Do you go through stages too?  What do you bounce between?  Let me know in the comments below.

Have an excellent day!
